First half trades
Swapping, trading, bartering, the art of the deal.  Whatever you want to call it, trading is a major factor in fantasy baseball, and this year's first half deals in MRLB have turned contenders into pretenders and given other teams the boost they needed.  Let's analyze each trade and see who got the better end of the deal so far...
4/23/01
Frank Thomas traded to the Badass Cowboys
Darryl Kile traded to Sj & Associates

It's fairly obvious who got the better end of the deal here.  Thomas went 1 for 11 with the BCs before suffering a season ending injury.  Kile has 7 wins, 82 Ks, a 2.83 ERA, and a 1.17 WHIP with Sj at the All-Star Break.  This one was a steal for Sj.

Advantage:  Sj & Associates

5/14/01
Julian Tavarez, Charles Johnson, Danny Graves traded to North Siders
Dan Reichert, Mike Hampton, Sandy Alomar traded to Firewire

Reichert and Tavarez cancel each other out because they will be traded again later in the season back to their original teams.  With the North Siders, CJ has a .248 average with 6 HRs, 24 RBIs and 20 Rs; not bad for a catcher.  Graves has given the North Siders 5 saves, 12 Ks, a 4.87 ERA, and a 1.08 WHIP.  These stats are about what the North Siders expected and are much better than what Firewire received.  Since the trade, Hampton has a 5.20 ERA, a 1.72 WHIP, 37 Ks, and 4 wins.  Alomar hit just .129 with 2 RBIs before getting injured.  If Alomar doesn't start hitting, this one could become even more lopsided.

Advantage:  North Siders

5/26/01
Adam Kennedy traded to Redrum
Greg Vaughn traded to Vavster

Overall, these two players have similar stats since the trade, but Vavster has only played Vaughn half the time.  Unfortunately, it was the wrong half.  With Vavster, Vaughn is hitting .188 with 3 HRs, 10 RBIs, and 12 Rs.  Meanwhile, Kennedy is hitting .305 with 1 HR, 9 RBIs, 14 Rs, and 4 SBs.  Redrum got the better bargain so far, but if Vaughn continues his power surge, this one might even out by the end of the year.

Advantage:  Redrum

5/26/01
Ugueth Urbina traded to the Badass Cowboys
Roger Cedeno traded to Threepeats

Both teams got what they wanted out of this trade - speed on one side and saves on the other.  Cedeno, however, has done a better job of helping his new club.  Cedeno only has 6 RBIs and no home runs with Threepeats, but is hitting .333 with 14 SBs, which is why he was acquired.  Urbina, not playing every week for the BCs, only has given them 2 saves, 12 Ks, but has an ERA of 1.74 and a 1.16 WHIP.  Not bad, but certainly not enough saves to offset the lost SBs.  If Cedeno continues to get on base effectively, this trade will continually reap benefits for Threepeats.

Advantage:  Threepeats

6/2/01
Roger Clemens traded to Sj & Associates
Miguel Tejada traded to Threepeats

Tejada has performed near expectations for Threepeats, posting nubmers of .286, 6 HRs, 19 RBIs, and 23 Rs for his new team.  Clemens, however, has been the best pitcher in baseball since the trade, providing Sj with 6 wins, 45 Ks, a 1.91 ERA, and a 1.06 WHIP in just 6 weeks of work.  Unless Clemens breaks down physically, this trade will continue to favor Sj.

Advantage:  Sj & Associates

6/3/01
Mike Matthews, Richard Hidalgo, Troy Glaus traded to the Badass Cowboys
Mike Mussina, Doug Mientkiewicz, Jose Jimenez traded to Eggs

Matthews was released before he played a game for the BCs.  Hidalgo has disappointed, hitting .231 with 3 HRs, 13 RBIs, and 12 Rs with the BCs.  Glaus hasn't fared any better, hitting a miniscule .174 with 6 HRs, 11 RBIs, 18 Rs, and 2 SBs since the trade.  Mussina has pitched well for Eggs, giving him 4 wins, 38 Ks, and a 3.40 ERA.  Doug M. hasn't done much, hitting .267 with 2 HRs, 15 RBIs, and 16 Rs.  The big surprise is Jimenez who, despite not throwing many innings, has amassed 2 wins and 3 saves with a 2.75 ERA in just over a month's time.  Hidalgo and Glaus can still turn it around, but for now, this trade is heavily favoring Eggs.

Advantage:  Eggs

6/3/01
Bernie Williams traded to Slim Shady
Eric Milton, Doug Glanville traded to Redrum

At first glance, I thought this trade was lopsided, but because Redrum received two players, it has played out fairly.  Williams has been the hottest hitter in baseball since the trade, awarding Slim with an even .400 average, 9 HRs, 30 RBIs, 31 Rs, and 4 SBs!  Glanville hasn't done poorly, however, with a .299 clip including 18 Rs and 7 SBs.  Milton has been average, which is not a bad thing for pitchers these days.  With Redrum, Milton has a 4.75 ERA, 2 wins, 20 Ks, and a 1.37 WHIP.  When Bernie cools down, this trade will be even or possibly favor Redrum, but for now, with the amazing offensive production over the past month for Williams, Slim Shady gets the slight nod.

Advantage:  Slim Shady

6/4/01
Raul Casanova traded to Threepeats
Brad Ausmus traded to the Badass Cowboys

Threepeats hasn't played Casanova and the BCs have released Ausmus.  ZZZzzz.

Advantage:  Even

6/10/01
David Wells, Dan Reichert traded to the North Siders
Julian Tavarez, Jeff Kent, Scott Brosius traded to Firewire

Firewire got a little payback from the North Siders with this trade.  Tavarez and Reichert are back on their original teams.  With David Wells possibly out for the year after giving the North Siders just 1 win, it's hard to see how this trade can become favorable for them.  Kent is hitting .347 with 3 HRs, 17 RBIs, and 15 Rs with Firewire, but Brosius has struggled in a limited role.  If Kent continues to hit well, this trade will pay off big time for Firewire.

Advantage:  Firewire

6/17/01
Jermaine Dye traded to Firewire
Derek Lowe traded to Sj & Associates

It's only been about 2 1/2 half weeks, but Lowe already has 5 saves for Sj.  His ERA and WHIP are high, but the innings are few.  Dye  has knocked in 9, scored 7, and hit 3 HRs while batting .236 for Firewire.  It's too early to tell who will benefit most from this deal, but for now the 5 saves give Sj a slight edge.

Advantage:  Sj & Associates

6/23/01
Rick Reed, Bobby Abreu traded to the Badass Cowboys
Greg Maddux, Mark Grace traded to the Stonecutters

Reed has yet to get a win in a Badass Cowboy uniform, and his WHIP and ERA are above average.  Maddux, meanwhile, has 3 wins, a 2.14 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP for the Stonecutters.  Offsetting the pitchers are the hitters, however.  Grace hasn't produced much value, with 0 HRs, 6 RBIs and a .261 average, while Abreu is hitting .280, with 4 HRs, 12 RBIs, 12 Rs, and 5 SBs in just 2 weeks.  This one is a close call and will likely remain that way at the end of the year, but Reed's minor injuries and missed starts are the difference maker so far in this trade.

Advantage:  Stonecutters

6/24/01
John Vander Wal traded to Firewire
Tony Womack traded to Vavster

This deal was supposed to give Vavster some needed speed, but so far both players have 3 stolen bases on their new teams.  While Womack hasn't done much else, Vander Wal has added 2 HRs and 7 RBIs.  Womack's speed may even things out by the end of the year, but for now Firewire is getting more production.

Advantage:  Firewire

6/29/01
Jamie Moyer, Tyler Houston traded to Redrum
Ben Petrick, Hideo Nomo traded to Vavster

Not enough time has elapsed to evaluate this trade, but it should be an interesting one by season's end.

Advantage:  Incomplete
There were a lot of trades in just the first half of the season, many of them making a serious impact on the clubs involved.  The second half doesn't look to be quiet, either, as many teams still have a shot at the title.  Who will make the deal that will lead them to the prize?  We'll find out that answer in about 3 months.  Until then, good luck and may all your trades fall in your favor.
